Balco is the largest European supplier of open and glazed balconies, with emphasis on the markets in Finland, Norway, Denmark, Holland, Germany, the United Kingdom and Sweden. David Andersson is head of marketing, and he is responsible for the implementation and use of BIM at Balco.
What made you decide to make your products available as digital objects, and what advantages have you as manufacturers gained from doing that?
Our products are unique and they can't be compared to those of our competitors, as we are at the very forefront when it comes to technology. Prescribers like architects, engineers and construction companies will immediately recognise this when they get to see our products in the BIMobject cloud, which is why it's so important for us to be there - so that new customers are able to discover our products. BIMobject.com helps us reach potential clients globally, and not just in the markets where we already operate.
How do you use BIMobject's services in your day-to-day business?
I regularly scan the market to see what's going on, and we have sales representants specifically dedicated to keep track on what products are being downloaded in each specific market. They then contact the prospects to support them with information and to answer their questions. The BIMobject platform is a great help for our sales team because it gives an indication of what is currently in demand, enabling us to adjust our offer. If for example 9 out of 10 users choose to download our glazed balcony solution, then the portal works as an effective tool for market research as well.
What are your plans for the future in terms of digitalisation?
We would like to expand our offer by making more products available as digital objects. We will also make our BIM-modules available for ArchiCAD, on top of Revit, which is our standard today.
Could you tell us about an occasion when downloads in the BIMobject Cloud has turned into real business?
We are running a large project in Hangö, Finland, where the underlay for a photo montage led to a request for a more detailed technical description, which eventually turned into a real project. We also have two or three projects in the UK where we've received relatively large orders through the BIMobject platform.
